In July of this year, Microsoft closed its Diversity, Equity & Inclusion department and laid off the entire dedicated team, a decision communicated to the rest of the company's team via an email stating that the measure was motivated by "changes in business needs" and that the issue was no longer "as critical to business as it was in 2020." In recent months, other giants like Google, Meta, X, and Zoom have also announced similar decisions.
